Criticisms and compliments of Michael Bay's film

Preface:

Most people say a glass of milk a day will keep the doctor away, but I think a Michael Bay movie a year will have the same results. Michael Bay’s films are not for audiences and critics to thoroughly examine in depth, but rather they are strictly for enjoyment. Many people go beyond what they see, and it begins to become what all directors want to avoid. From his childhood up until today, Michael Bay has constantly been remarked, criticized, and confronted for his performances but he persevered. Depending on people’s points of view, audiences can turn against Michael Bay or become supporters of Bay’s films. Thus, instead of only talking about Michael Bay’ s films, I would rather talk about the criticisms and the compliments of his films. From the directors’ perspective, everyone is a critic and no matter how the critics might be, the directors only produce their films for the audiences to remember what they have done and to make sure the audience is entertained.

Introduction of Genre One:

Genre one is a research paper to clarify the dispute over the criticisms and the compliments of Michael Bay’s productions and his usages and skills of different film techniques. Many critics did not become critics because of what they believe, but they have reasonable support because of his performances and accomplishments. Critics scrutinize every scene and how it influenced the audiences. Through meticulous examination, the critics concentrate on the weaknesses of Michael Bay’s films. Although many critics strongly criticize his productions, there are supporters of Michael Bay films. Due to his supporters, he won several honorable awards confirming that he created movies that no one ever expected. On the other hand, he also received some infamous awards from the critics and how they resentfully have been dissatisfied with his productions.

Genre One: Research Paper

“Lights, Cameras, and Action!” As the film begins to start rolling, the masterpiece of the movie is gradually being produced. Actors and actresses are ready to say their scripts and the story of the movie has begun. The deep emotion inside the audience burst out and starts to show how the movie had an impact on them. At the end of the movie, the credit appears and we could see the director’s name in a big font with bolded words. Recently, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen had reached $708 million globally and entertained many audiences throughout the world (Michael Bay's Biography). Michael Bay, the director of Transformers, is the youngest director to reach $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales. He is also one of the best modern day directors. His movies are extremely successful and widely popular for the audiences he directs towards. However, some people still have criticisms of his works, because they are not the audience Michael Bay is directing for.

Michael Bay claims to have been an illegitimate child of a famous director in the 1970s (Michael Bay's Biography). After being raised by parents that adopted him, Michael Bay enrolled in The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California to study films and other materials needed for creating movies. After his graduation from Pasadena, the beginning of his successes began to spark and many opportunities were waiting for his arrival. Through many advertisements that he created, he showed humor and created very famous quotes. For example, his “Got Milk” advertisements were one of his projects that were well known throughout the world. He was nominated for the best commercial director because of this commercial (Michael Bay's Biography). This led him to have interest in creating movies and to become the most profitable film director. Since the outcomes of the advertisements were very successful, his first film movie was more than what he expected.

In the 1990s, Michael Bay’s first featured movie,
Bad Boys, earned about $141 million in total revenue. His next movie, The Rock, received many small awards such as the Academy Award for Best Sound and MTV Movie Awards. In 1998, in coordination with Jerry Bruckheimer, Michael Bay directed Armageddon, which was chosen at the Academy Awards for Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound Editing (Michael Bay's Biography). With the advice of Bruckheimer, Bay was able to experience the use of multiple scenes and more dramatic effects. When The Island was first released, Bay did not cooperate with Bruckheimer and due to having no cooperation Bay earned less than the other films that he worked with Bruckheimer. In 2007, Transformers caught the audiences’ attentions and created the outbreak of fans. Globally, over $708 million of tickets were sold and some of the critics suggested positives compliments.

Even though his films have been highly acknowledged, many critics have suggested his movies need more work and his style is not good enough for Hollywood. Although
Armageddon and Pearl Harbor were two of the most popular films that he made, they were announced at the Golden Raspberry Awards, as the two worst films of the year, and he was elected as a worst director of the year (Michael Bay’s Biography). Michael Bay’s films are standardized for teenage boys; such as he uses too much action, explosions, and lack of character development. In Transformers, much of the action and explosions had to take place, but he did focused more on the story rather than the characters. Critics also don’t like switching between the scenes rapidly because it does not reveal the full story behind the scenes. Lastly, he uses the same style of filming the characters by encircling them and then zooming in on their faces. Michael Bay’s film techniques were already performed in his previous movies, and he is still using the same techniques that he obtained in his college years. The critics mentioned that his skills are at the same level as undergraduate students in The Art Center Colleges of Design (LA Times).

As a whole, Michael Bay is considered to be a successful director even though critics accuse him with derogatory phrases. He was able to overcome the criticisms and the difficulties by experiencing and reaching his way to the top. Although his childhood hardships left some painful marks in him, there is nothing to stop a man who is willing to share popular imagines with wanting audiences. Good directors see both sides of the world.

Introduction of Genre Two:

Through the knowledge of genre one, I now have clear understanding from different perspectives. I will make a newspaper article writing on different point of views towards the director, Michael Bay. This will allow Michael Bay's fan and critics to understand why and how the other opponents criticize or praise Michael Bay's films. Observing from the opposite side can be very beneficial and effective to realize what they have done.

Introduction of Genre Three:

In my Third Multi-Genre Project, I decided to make a video clip about Michael Bay’s film and his techniques of filming. His use of big explosions, aircrafts, and actions scenes will be thoroughly inspected. In addition, in the movie clip, I will include the scenes that many critics usually disapprove of. For example, too much dramatic effects or focusing only on just one character. Through these video clips merged together, the audiences will scrutinize the production of Michael Bay’s films in depth. This clip will also visualize why other people enjoy watching his films instead of criticizing his movie production. It would be beneficial if all the audiences are on the same page and able to understand what could have been better.

Epilogue:
Through all the genres that I have studied, I have learned that every person has a unique way of viewing. However, all the audiences have similar perspectives towards the films even with the directors. Even though some directors have been severely rebuked and reprimanded, they always persevere to make the audiences full of satisfaction and blessings. My perspective had been altered through researching deeply into Michael Bay’s perspective. I have noticed that even though Michael Bay tries to prevent criticisms of his films, he is producing films for everyone to remember him as a persevering director. I have hoped that people might have learned that directors make movies for all people around the world. Criticisms and compliments do not matter to the directors, but to the audiences themselves. Directing can lead to criticisms and compliments but criticisms and compliments cannot lead to directing.
